Botanists from Spain discovered dahlias as a wildflower growing on the side of the hills of Mexico during the early 16th century, although historians suggest that based on unearthed paintings and illustrations ancient civilizations have known and have been growing it to either consume or as a medicinal herb.
Akin to the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia, which all belong to the Asteraceae family of flowering plants, they are known for their big blooms, which can range from five centimeters or up to 30 centimeters in diameter, commonly called the dinner plate dahlias.
Dahlias blooming season is usually late summer to early fall. Because they come in several species and probably thousands of hybrids and varieties, the options are endless with dahlias. Coxcomb (Celosia)

- The Celosia cristata, which looks resembles a coral or a brain
