The Prettiest Flowers Blooming for Pride Month

The Prettiest Flowers Blooming for Pride Month

June is officially Pride Month! Whether you're a loud and proud member of the vibrant LGBTQ+ community or an ally who wants to greet queer loved ones with "Happy Pride," here's how flowers can make this occasion more meaningful.

Flowers and Pride History

Flowers have always been a part of Pride Month. In the 1970s, people carried flowers as they marched through Greenwich Village to remember the grim Stonewall Riots in New York City. It's a massive demonstration calling for equal rights and respect that inspired the now iconic movement and is considered the first-ever Pride March in history.

What Does the Rainbow Pride Flag Mean?

According to CNN, the original Pride flag was designed by the late Gilbert Baker, an artist and activist who was also outspoken about being gay. It was commissioned by his friend Harvey Milk, the first member of the LGBTQ+ community to become elected as a government official in California.

Inspired by the US national flag and the rainbow, he designed the first flag, which measured 30 by 60 feet and was hand-sewed personally by the artist. He gave each color a meaning:

  • Hot pink for sex
  • Red for life
  • Orange for healing
  • Yellow for sunlight
  • Green for nature
  • Turquoise for magic
  • Blue for harmony
  • Violet for spirit

After its debut, Baker narrowed the colors to six, removing pink and turquoise to make it easier to mass-produce. Nevertheless, the rainbow flag is still a fitting representation of the fabulousness, uniqueness, diversity, and individuality of the LGBTQ+ community.

Meaningful Flowers for Pride Celebrations

  • Rainbow roses

What better way to celebrate Pride than a bouquet of rainbow-colored roses? Also known as Happy Roses or Kaleidoscope Roses, these eye-catching blooms were first grown by Peter van de Werken from the Netherlands.

  • Green carnations

The green carnation was first associated with the LGBTQ movement by esteemed author Oscar Wilde. The story goes that he asked his friends to wear the bright flower on their lapels to the opening night of his comedy "Lady Windermere's Fan" and has become a secret code of men attracted to men.
