The very word “rose” conjures images of velvety petals and a romantic scent. Very few scents captivate the senses quite like the rose. Its fragrance offers a diverse range of olfactory experiences that cater to every preference and go far beyond the stereotypical "rose" scent. From the dewy freshness of a morning bloom to the rich, honeyed depth of a vintage perfume. Its classic allure and unmistakable charm have made it a staple fragrance.
What makes rose fragrances so alluring? At its core, the scent of roses is a complex concoction of over three hundred compounds, each playing its part in creating the symphony of scent. Among these compounds, geraniol and citronellol are the stars, lending the rose its signature sweet and floral notes. Geraniol is also responsible for the scent of geraniums and lemongrass but can be found in most flowers and fruits.
As Shakespeare would say, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. There are 5 main groups of roses; Old Rose, Tea, Myrrh, Fruit, and Musk. And within each group, there are numerous variations with their distinctive scents. Some roses may have a combination of fruity and other scents like tea rose or myrrh. The fragrance of roses can also be affected by different factors, such as the age of the flower, the season, and even the time of day. Although it would still be better for you to go out and smell the roses for yourself, we’ll do our best to give you an idea of how each one of them would smell.
Old Rose
This is the classic romantic rose scent we often picture. It's rich, heady, and complex, with notes of honey, clove, geranium, and sometimes even hints of fruit and spice. This fragrance is typically found in pink and red roses. It is often associated with the Damask and Centifolia rose classifications, which are commonly used in rose perfumes and other scented products.
Tea
The tea rose has a delicate, light and sweet fragrance. It has subtle floral notes and hints of spice like nutmeg. It’s less intense than the other roses, but still undeniably rosy. Tea roses have a softer, more subtle sweetness compared to the heady aroma of old roses. Reminiscent of the smell of tea leaves, it can be quite tarry and earthy. Depending on the variety, you might catch a whiff of citrus, lemon-like or bergamot, and green tea.
Myrrh
Often described as mysterious and evocative. This fragrance is unique and resinous, with warm, balsamic, and slightly spicy notes. Due to its strong herbal aroma, the myrrh fragrance can be a hit or miss for some people. The presence of anise-like and licorice notes gives it a warm and slightly medicinal character. Despite the spiciness, there's also a sweetness to the fragrance, making it complex and interesting.
Fruit
Typically characterized as fresh, uplifting, and cheerful. It's a welcome change from the old roses’ classic, heady scent. This broad category encompasses a wide range of fruity scents, from sweet and juicy to tart and refreshing. The beauty of fruity roses is their diversity. They can range from zesty citrus notes to rich berry notes and exotic fruity aromas.
Musk
A blend of the classic rose aroma and the warm earthy notes of musk. This intriguing scent is not actually derived from the rose petals, but rather from the stamens. It's a powdery, animalic, and slightly sweet aroma, adding depth and complexity to the fragrance. Imagine the smell of damp soil or rich, dark chocolate. The combination of rose and musk creates an alluring and sensual fragrance.
