Flowers Can Make You A Morning Person, Harvard Study Reveals

If you feel sluggish, unmotivated, and cranky every morning —or live with someone who does — a Harvard study shows that a beautiful bouquet can make a big difference.

A Dose of Pretty and Positivity in the Morning

Researchers at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital conducted a behavioral study involving individuals who identified feeling least positive in the morning.

"The morning blahs, it turns out, is a real phenomenon, with positive moods – happiness, friendliness, and warmth, for example – manifesting much later in the day," lead researcher Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D. said. "Interestingly, when we placed a small bouquet of flowers into their morning routines, people perked up."

The participants' homes were filled with a bunch of fresh floral arrangements in places where they could see them first thing in the morning, like the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.

For example, they woke up next to a bunch of gorgeous sunflowers on their bedside table. They had their breakfast and drank their morning cup of coffee while admiring a vase filled with colorful roses on the kitchen table.

At the end of the study, the participants said they felt:

  • More comfortable at home
  • Less stressed and anxious
  • Kinder and more compassionate
  • More energized throughout the day

Aside from feeling more optimistic about mornings, they also revealed a noticeable boost in their energy levels and that the wonderful feelings lasted the whole day.

Mood Contagion: Happiness from Flowers Can be Viral

According to Etcoff, they also observed mood contagion. For example, participants who felt fantastic after being surrounded by flowers in the morning tend to pass the good vibes to other people they interact with. It could be their housemates, other family members, random folks they pass by on their commute, or colleagues when they get to work.
