The medium-sized city of Aliso Viejo spanning 6,600 acres is a slice of the 26,000-acre Moulton Ranch, which was originally owned by the Moulton family. Some parts of the land had been sold and became part of other Orange County cities, including Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel.
It was not until 1976 when Mission Viejo Company acquired hectares of land from the family-owned ranch and developed it into the master-planned city that will be home to at least 20,000 residential properties and a population of 50,000 people. A significant part of the original 6,600 acres, approximately 2,600 acres, were devoted to Orange County and became a part of the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park. Another 800 acres were designed to be used for public parks, wide open spaces, recreation, schools, and other useful community facilities.
